Most people buy supplements based on the front of the label — the product name, the claims, the design. This is exactly what supplement companies want. The front of a supplement bottle is advertising. The back is where you find out whether the product is actually worth buying.
Reading labels properly takes about 60 seconds once you know what to look for. Those 60 seconds can save you from spending money on products that are either ineffective doses of good ingredients, cheap forms of important nutrients, or outright nonsense dressed up in scientific-sounding language.
Start with the serving size
The first thing to check is the serving size — and specifically how it relates to the rest of the label. Every number on a supplement facts panel refers to one serving, not one capsule. Many supplements use a serving size of 2, 3, or even 6 capsules.
This matters because the doses on the label — which may look impressive — might require taking a handful of capsules to achieve. A "500mg magnesium glycinate" per serving on the label means very little until you check whether that serving is 1 capsule or 4.
Check how many capsules are in the bottle and how many servings that represents. Divide to get cost per serving — this is the only meaningful price comparison between supplements.
Serving sizes of 4-6 capsules with low per-capsule doses are often used to make products look more potent than they are. Calculate the cost per serving, not per capsule.
Check the form of each ingredient
For minerals and some vitamins, the form is as important as the dose. The form tells you how the active ingredient is bound — and this determines how much your body actually absorbs.
Magnesium: Glycinate and malate are highly bioavailable. Citrate is moderate. Oxide is poor (4-5% absorption). If a product just says "magnesium" without specifying the form, it's almost certainly oxide.
Zinc: Picolinate, glycinate, and bisglycinate are well absorbed. Oxide and sulfate are poorly absorbed. The form matters significantly.
Vitamin B12: Methylcobalamin is the active, bioavailable form. Cyanocobalamin is cheaper and requires conversion — a step that some people (especially those with MTHFR gene variants) cannot perform efficiently.
Folate/B9: Methylfolate (5-MTHF) is the active form. Folic acid is synthetic and requires enzymatic conversion that a significant proportion of the population cannot perform well.
Vitamin D: D3 (cholecalciferol) is more effective at raising blood levels than D2 (ergocalciferol). Always choose D3.
Creatine: Monohydrate is the only form with robust clinical evidence. HCL, buffered, and ethyl ester forms cost more and are not better.
If a mineral supplement doesn't specify the form — magnesium what? zinc what? — it's almost always the cheapest form with the worst absorption. Ask or move on.
Understand elemental vs compound weight
This is one of the most common sources of confusion on supplement labels — and it's not always clear whether companies are being deceptive or simply unhelpful.
When a mineral is bound to another compound (as it must be for stability and absorption), the label can list either the total weight of the compound or the weight of the mineral itself (elemental weight). These numbers are very different.
Example: a capsule containing 500mg of magnesium glycinate contains only about 70mg of elemental magnesium. If the label says "magnesium glycinate 500mg" this is the compound weight. If it says "magnesium (as magnesium glycinate) 70mg" this is the elemental weight.
When comparing supplements and comparing to research doses, you need the elemental weight. The effective dose of magnesium from research is 300-400mg elemental magnesium — not 300-400mg of magnesium glycinate. Getting the distinction wrong means dramatically under-dosing.
Good manufacturers list both: "Magnesium (as Magnesium Glycinate) 200mg" — where 200mg is the elemental amount. Manufacturers who only list the compound weight make you do the maths yourself, or hope you don't.
Proprietary blends — the biggest red flag
A proprietary blend is a listed combination of ingredients where the individual ingredient amounts are hidden. The label shows the total weight of the blend but not how much of each ingredient it contains.
The stated justification for proprietary blends is protecting trade secrets. The real reason, in almost all cases, is that the manufacturer doesn't want you to know that most ingredients in the blend are present in amounts far below effective doses — a practice known as "label decoration" or "fairy dusting."
Proprietary blends hide how much of each ingredient you're actually getting. Without knowing the individual doses, you cannot know whether any ingredient is present in an amount that has been shown to be effective. Avoid products with proprietary blends unless you have specific reason to trust the manufacturer.
There are no legitimate reasons a reputable supplement company needs to hide ingredient doses from consumers. Transparent labelling is a sign of a company that stands behind their product.
Third-party testing — what it means
The supplement industry is poorly regulated in most countries. Products can be sold without proving that they contain what the label claims, that the doses are accurate, or that they're free from contaminants. Third-party testing addresses this gap.
Third-party testing means an independent laboratory has tested the product and verified:
Identity and potency: The product contains the ingredients it claims, at the doses listed. This is more important than it sounds — studies have found that a significant proportion of supplements contain less than labelled amounts of key ingredients.
Purity: The product is free from contaminants — heavy metals, pesticides, bacterial contamination, and (relevant for athletes) banned substances.
Certifications to look for:
NSF Certified for Sport — the gold standard for athletes. Tests for banned substances in addition to identity and purity.
Informed Sport / Informed Choice — similar to NSF, comprehensive testing including banned substances.
USP Verified — tests identity, potency, and purity. Well-regarded in the US.
Informed Ingredient — certifies individual ingredients rather than finished products.
Third-party testing certifications on the label mean an independent laboratory has verified the product contains what it claims. For athletes subject to drug testing, NSF Certified for Sport or Informed Sport is essential.
Marketing language to ignore
Supplement marketing has developed an elaborate vocabulary designed to imply scientific validation without actually making verifiable claims. Learning to recognise and ignore this language saves time and prevents manipulation:
"Clinically proven" — almost meaningless. Clinical studies vary enormously in quality. A single poorly designed study with 12 participants showing a trend constitutes "clinical evidence" by the loosest definition.
"Patented formula" — patents protect commercial processes, not efficacy. A patented supplement formula is no more likely to be effective than an unpatented one.
"Pharmaceutical grade" — not a regulated term. It can mean anything or nothing.
"Maximum absorption" / "ultra-bioavailable" — vague claims with no defined standard. Compare the specific form of the ingredient against known bioavailability data instead.
"No fillers" — while minimal additives are generally preferable, "no fillers" is often used as a marketing claim without any clear definition of what a filler is.
"Synergistic blend" — usually means nothing more than "we put multiple things together." Genuine synergy between ingredients is rare and should be backed by specific evidence.

The "other ingredients" section at the bottom of the supplement facts panel lists everything that's not the active ingredient. This includes fillers, binders, capsule materials, and flow agents used in manufacturing. Most of these are harmless, but a few are worth knowing about:
Magnesium stearate — a common flow agent. Harmless at the amounts used in supplements despite occasional online claims to the contrary.
Silicon dioxide — another flow agent. Harmless.
Titanium dioxide — a whitening agent used in some capsule coatings. Some concern about its safety at high doses, though supplement amounts are very low. Easily avoided by choosing products without it.
Artificial colours and flavours — unnecessary in capsules and tablets. If you see these, it's a minor negative signal about the manufacturer's priorities.
Gelatin — the capsule material in most standard supplements. Not suitable for vegans. Look for "vegetable capsule," "HPMC capsule," or "vegicap" if you need vegan products.
A practical checklist before buying
Run through these questions before committing to any supplement:
1. What form is the active ingredient? Is it a bioavailable form or the cheapest option?
2. Does it list elemental or compound weight for minerals? Calculate the elemental amount and compare to research-backed effective doses.
3. Are individual ingredient doses listed? Or is it a proprietary blend hiding the amounts?
4. Is there third-party testing? Look for NSF, Informed Sport, USP, or similar certification logos.
5. What does the serving size actually mean? How many capsules, and what's the cost per serving?
6. What does the research say about this dose? Is the amount in the product consistent with doses shown to be effective in human trials?
A product that passes all six questions is likely worth buying. A product that fails multiple questions — particularly the proprietary blend and third-party testing questions — should be left on the shelf regardless of how impressive the front label looks.
The brands that consistently pass
Several brands have established reputations for transparent labelling, quality ingredients, and third-party testing. While this isn't an exhaustive list, products from these manufacturers are generally worth starting with when you're researching specific supplements:
