L-Theanine

The amino acid in green tea responsible for that calm-but-alert feeling. L-theanine is one of the most practical daily supplements — it takes the edge off caffeine, reduces anxiety, and improves focus without any sedation.

What is it

What is L-Theanine?

L-theanine is an amino acid found almost exclusively in tea leaves (Camellia sinensis). It's what gives green tea its characteristic calm, focused quality — distinct from the jittery alertness of pure caffeine. Discovered in Japan in 1949, it's one of the most studied relaxation compounds in nutritional science.

L-theanine works by increasing alpha brain wave activity — the same state associated with relaxed alertness during meditation. It also modulates GABA, serotonin and dopamine receptors, producing mild anxiolytic effects without sedation. Crucially, it doesn't cause drowsiness at standard doses.

Benefits

What the Research Shows

The Caffeine Stack

Why L-Theanine + Caffeine is the Best Stack in Nutrition

The 2:1 ratio of L-theanine to caffeine (e.g. 200mg theanine + 100mg caffeine) is one of the most consistently replicated findings in nutritional neuroscience. Multiple studies show the combination produces better cognitive performance than either alone.

Caffeine increases alertness and reduces reaction time but also increases heart rate, anxiety and jitteriness in many people. L-theanine specifically counteracts these negative effects while preserving and even enhancing the cognitive benefits. The result is clean, focused energy without the crash or anxiety.

💡 The classic ratio

200mg L-theanine with 100mg caffeine is the most studied combination. If you drink coffee, take 200mg L-theanine alongside it. If you use pre-workout, many already contain this ratio — check the label.

Dosing Protocol

How to Take L-Theanine

With CaffeineMost popular use
100–200mg
Take with your morning coffee or caffeine source. 2:1 ratio to caffeine is optimal — so 200mg theanine with 100mg caffeine (roughly one cup of coffee).
Standalone — Anxiety/SleepEvening use
200–400mg
Higher doses (200–400mg) taken in the evening can improve sleep quality and reduce racing thoughts. No sedation — just reduced mental noise.
Interactions

What to Stack With L-Theanine

Caffeine — the primary and most evidence-backed combination. Always take together for optimal effect.

Ashwagandha — complementary anxiety reduction via different mechanisms. L-theanine is fast-acting (30 mins), ashwagandha builds over weeks. Good combination for people with chronic stress and anxiety.

Magnesium glycinate — both support GABA activity. Taking together in the evening is a well-tolerated combination for sleep and relaxation.

No negative interactions — L-theanine has no known negative interactions with common supplements or medications at standard doses.
