What is Whey Protein?

Whey is the liquid byproduct of cheese production. When milk is curdled, whey separates from the curds — it's then filtered, dried and processed into the protein powder you buy. It's a complete protein containing all nine essential amino acids, with a particularly high leucine content that makes it exceptionally effective for muscle protein synthesis.

Despite being a supplement, whey is simply food in a convenient form. It's not a drug, not a hormone, and not "unnatural." It's the protein fraction of milk, concentrated.

The three main forms differ primarily in processing level and protein content. Concentrate (~70–80% protein) contains some fat and lactose. Isolate (~90%+ protein) is filtered further to remove most fat and lactose — better for lactose-intolerant people. Hydrolysate is pre-digested for faster absorption, useful around training but more expensive with minimal additional benefit for most people.

Leucine — whey is already high in leucine, the key trigger for muscle protein synthesis. Adding extra leucine is rarely necessary.

Digestive enzymes — if you experience bloating from whey concentrate, digestive enzyme supplements can help. Or switch to isolate.

Carbohydrates — adding fast carbs post-workout with your whey shake restores glycogen and provides a small insulin boost that may slightly enhance amino acid uptake. Good for high-volume athletes.
